Live birds of prey in the classroom!

This is a unique opportunity to arouse the curiosity of young people about the wildlife around them! UQROP educators travel to schools with two ambassador birds to demystify the biology of birds of prey, talk about their relationship with humans and discover some of the species of birds of prey that sometimes live right next door!

All our animations include the presentation of two live birds of prey.

Kindergarten
Bird of what?
Bird of prey!

The children learn the body parts of birds of prey with the help of anatomical parts and two birds of prey, for a period of 45 minutes.

Kindergarten
Little raptor
will become big.

The children learn about the development of a bird. They discover anatomical parts of birds of prey by touching them (feathers, wings, legs, etc.) and meets 2 birds of prey.

Primary school – Grade 1 and 2
Day has eyes,
night has ears.

Students learn to follow the development and growth of birds, and discovers the main characteristics of birds of prey, their life habits, and a few species in Quebec. They will learn about the rehabilitation work done at UQROP.

Primary school – Grade 3 and 4
Birds of prey
everywhere!

Students learn to differentiate between the various habitats in Quebec and to associate birds of prey with their way of life. They discover their main characteristics, some Quebec species and learn about the rehabilitation work done at UQROP.

Primary school – Grade 5 and 6
Their problems
are our problem

Students learn to categorize the species of birds of prey in Quebec. They are introduced to the biology of birds of prey and learn about the rehabilitation work done at UQROP.

High School
Birds
and humans

Students will learn about the biology of birds of prey, the species present in Quebec and their adaptations to their way of life. The ecological role of birds of prey and the rehabilitation efforts of the UQROP are also discussed.

High School - Workshop
Become
a biologist

A 75-minute hands-on activity. This activity should follow the “Birds of Prey and Humans” animation.

In teams of two, students will step into the shoes of a biologist and must:

  • Handle and observe anatomical parts of birds of prey;
  • Identify naturalized birds of prey using morphometric measurements;
  • Learn to use an identification sheet;
  • Observe a live bird of prey at the roost.
Primary School (Grade 5 and 6) and High School - Workshop
Find the prey!

Students are introduced to the work of a biologist by dissecting a bird-of-prey regurgitation pellet and reconstructing the skeleton of the ingested prey. A short introduction is included. The activity is a good complement to the basic animation. Reservation for the workshop only does not include the presentation of live birds of prey.

FAQ
+What time does the biologist/animator arrive?
The animator arrives approximately 30 minutes before the first presentation to prepare the materials and computer support. Please consider notifying the daycare service about the animator’s arrival if the presentation is before the teacher’s arrival or outside office hours.
+What do we need to prepare before the biologist arrives?
A large empty table is needed for the biologist to place the anatomical material on. If available, an interactive board or a screen with projector will be used during the presentation. If not available, UQROP must be notified at the time of reservation so that the biologist can provide the necessary equipment for the multimedia presentation.

During the presentation, students can be seated at their desks or on the floor, depending on the location and the number of students.

Please note that it is preferable that the students are outside the room during the preparation and installation of the material.

+Is there a maximum number of children per class?
Yes, the maximum number of children is 35. Please note that a fee is charged for each additional child.
+What is a typical UQROP presentation?
The animation begins with an interactive presentation with PowerPoint visuals to learn more about our organization, the characteristics of birds of prey, examples of different species in Quebec and a section on rehabilitation (optional depending on the cycle). The animation ends with the presentation of the 2 birds of prey.

Note that the order is subject to change depending on the biologist and the group.

+How long does the presentation last?
The animations last 1h15 each. If you book more than one, it is a good idea to allow a 5 to 10 minute break between each animation so that the biologist can get ready for the next group.
+Why should the biologist keep the same room?
The biologist arrives with a lot of equipment and two birds of prey in different crates. By limiting the number of trips between the classroom, the time wasted in storing and setting up the equipment is avoided. In addition, the birds of prey benefit from a more stable environment and their movements are limited, increasing their comfort.
+What if there is no room available for the whole day?
The best solution is to have the students experience a “Get Out of the Routine!” day. One of the teachers gives up his space for the UQROP biologist. That morning, the teacher has the students prepare the necessary school materials for the day. The children will be able to put everything in their backpacks and change classrooms during the day in the same way as high school students.
